Sony WH-1000XM5 Review: Still the Class Leader for Travel?

Sony’s WH-1000 series has set the standard for noise-cancelling headphones since 2016. The XM5 brings a sleeker design, dual-processor ANC, and improved call quality — though folding-flat capability is gone.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Review: Still the Class Leader for Travel?
Tested for this review.

Our rating: 4.7/5

Lighter, smarter, and with better calls than the XM4. If you fly often, these belong in your carry-on.

Active Noise Cancellation

Sony's V1 + QN1 dual-chip system blocks engine drone and crowd chatter as well as anything we've tested. On a 6-hour flight, conversations from the row behind became inaudible.

Sound Quality

Warm, lush sound signature with deep but controlled bass. LDAC support means hi-res audio from compatible Android phones. Equalizer in the Sony Connect app lets you tune to taste.

Comfort

Soft synthetic leather earcups distribute pressure well even at hour 6. Slightly tighter clamp than the XM4 — beneficial for ANC seal, slightly fatiguing for big heads.

Battery & Smart Features

30 hours with ANC on. Multipoint pairs two devices simultaneously. Speak-to-Chat auto-pauses music when you start talking — actually useful, not gimmicky.

Pros

  • Industry-leading ANC
  • 30-hour battery life
  • Crystal-clear voice calls
  • Multipoint Bluetooth

Cons

  • No longer folds flat
  • Touch panel can register accidental swipes
  • Premium price ($399)

Final Verdict

Lighter, smarter, and with better calls than the XM4. If you fly often, these belong in your carry-on. Whether it fits your budget and use case is the only question left.
